Kyphoplasty is a procedure for patients who have had compression fractures (also called wedge fractures) in the spine. These types of fractures are frequently associated with osteoporosis (thin bones) and other disease processes.

How it works

A deflated balloon is placed inside the compressed vertebral body and slowly inflated. Once it's fully expanded, the vertebral body is filled with a specialized cement. When the cement sets, it will provide support for the vertebral body, and it will stabilize the spine.

While kyphoplasty isn't for everyone, it's proven highly effective in studies. Ask Dr. Gilthorpe if you're a good candidate.
